The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has disqualified the acting governor of Adamawa state, Umaru Fintiri, from contesting the state’s 11 October governorship bye-election under its platform.

The former Speaker of Adamawa State House of Assembly, who took over as acting governor after the impeachment of Governor Murtala Nyako, is ineligible to participate in the party’s 6 September 6.

Some loyalists of Nyako had claimed that Fintiri had defected to the All Progressives Congress.

But the Chairman of PDP screening panel, Ibrahim Mantu, who spoke to journalists after the screening exercise on Saturday, said Fintiri was disqualified on moral grounds.

Acting governor Fintiri has faced mounting criticisms over his decision to contest the election after having masterminded the removal of Nyako.

Other PDP candidates for the poll have accused him of staging a “coup” and lacking the moral right to contest.
