UEFA has set up a meeting between the football federations of Ukraine and Russia to discuss the Crimea, the European governing body’s president Michel Platini revealed Thursday.

The meeting will take place in Nyon, Switzerland on September 18.

Last Friday, UEFA said Crimean teams could not take part in competitions organised by the Russian Federation and that if they did, their results would not be recognised.

Crimean teams have been in limbo since March when the region voted to separate from Ukraine and was annexed by Russia.

“I can officially tell you that there will be a meeting between all the parties at UEFA’s headquarters on September 18,” said Platini from Monaco.

“We will all be around the same table. I don’t know if people will measure the importance of the process we’ve set in motion at UEFA but it’s extremely encouraging and we can already be proud.

“I just wanted to thank the federations of the two countries concerned because in an extremely difficult context they have opened the door so that a solution can be found.”
