The Federal Road Safety Commission on Monday began a special five days of patrol on three critical highways across the country to check recurring accidents.

A statement issued by Ms Stella Uchegbu, the Corps Public Education Officer, said that 240 personnel, 43 patrol vehicles and seven ambulances had been deployed for the exercise.

Uchegbu said the special patrol, tagged “Operation Shield IV” would cover Kaduna-Abuja-Okene, Lagos-Ibadan and Benin-Asaba highways.

She said the personnel for the exercise would be stationed at Abaji Unit Command, Mowe Unit Command and Edo Sector Command, respectively.

“The all inclusive exercise is pursuant to the commission’s strategic goal to reduce road crashes by 15 per cent and fatalities by 25 per cent by the end of 2014.

“Operation Shield, which has entered its 4th version, is designed primarily to shield road users from the incidence of road crashes, witnessed recently on specific highways,” Uchegbu said.

She said emphasis would be placed on public enlightenment, clearing of obstructions and enforcement of traffic rules and regulation, particularly lane indiscipline, speed limit, overloading and other violations.

Uchegbu identified attitude of motorists as a major causative factor for most of the road crashes, and called for behavioural change.
