The Zamfara Government has employed 29,000 youths from across the state as part of its efforts to boost its environmental sanitation programme in oder to ensure a clean environment.

Alhaji Sunusi Dan-Alhaji, Director-General of the state Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), made this known in an interview with the NAN on Tuesday in Gusau.

Dan-Alhaji said that the programme was is in line with the state government’s commitment toward achieving the MDGs in the state.

He said that 200 youths were selected from each of the 147 wards across the 14 local government areas of the state.

According to him, the programme was carried out by 10 different environmental sanitation consultancy companies, under the supervision of the state Environmental Sanitation Agency (ZESA).

“The sanitation is carried out twice in a week, where each of the youths receives a monthly stipend of N10,000 and we are seeing improvement in our environment.”

He said the MDGs Office had completed its 2013 programmes and commended the state government for supporting the programme.

“As part of our success from 2011 to date, we established and renovated over 100 dispensaries and upgraded various primary health centres to General Hospitals.

“In the areas of water supply, the semi-urban water projects executed in Bungudu and Maradun local government areas of the state have been completed and we are planning to execute more in other local governments.”

He further said that in the areas of education, poverty reduction and women empowerment, the state government had executed various projects worth millions of naira with the aim of achieving the MDGs before 2015.
