He added in his statement that the promotions became necessary in order to fill the vacancies created by recent retirements and promotions in the police.

According to him, the promotions would serve to re-invigorate and re position zonal police commands headed by AIGS in order to help tackle the country’s current security challenges.

The Commission had yesterday promoted eight officers to the rank of the deputy inspector general of police.

Mbu gained national prominence following what many regarded as his partisan stance in the face off with Governor Rotimi Amaechi when he was the Police Commissioner of Rivers State.

Many had regarded him as a tool in the hands of President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Patience who were battling to remove the Rivers State Governor from office.

In the same vein, Mbu had also alarmed the civil society when he tried to ban all forms of public protests in Abuja.
