Najeem Yasin, National President, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), on Tuesday commended the Federal Government for dismantling illegal roadblocks on the nation’s highways.

The National Economic Council (NEC) had on 14 August, directed the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Suleiman Abba, to dismantle illegal roadblocks on the nation’s highways.

The council said revenue collected from such roadblocks was not backed by law.

In a statement issued in Abuja by the Director of Information Services, NURTW, Mr Kefas Dogonyaro, Yasin also commended the federal government for improving the nation’s transport system.

He said the decision to remove the roadblocks was reached following complaints by the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) on multiple taxation across the country.

He said the illegal roadblocks had caused several accidents resulting to death of motorists, adding that it was also undermining transportation business in the country.
