The Federal Government on Tuesday in Abuja cautioned politicians in the country against involving security personnel in settling their personal scores.

The Coordinator, National Information Centre, Mr Mike Omeri, made the appeal while giving an update on the security situation in the country.

“It has been observed that it has become fashionable for politicians to use our security forces to settle their scores.

“We appeal to our politicians to keep our security agencies out of their politics and allow them to carry out their legitimate duties of protecting the nation and its people,” he said.

Also speaking, Ms Marilyn Ogar, the Spokeswoman of the Department of Service Services (DSS), appealed to politicians not to drag the service and other security agencies into their affairs. “It may please you to know that there is a running battle in Osun state as it has to do with DSS.

“The DSS will not be dragged into playing politics in Nigeria, the DSS is an agency for everybody and so we will not take side.

“We are advising that politicians should face their political activities and leave us out of their engagements,” Ogar said.

On allegation of abuse of human rights levelled against the military by the Amnesty International, Omeri absolved the Nigerian army.

Omeri said they were professional forces that would not get involved in such “a dastardly act”.

“The chance of their involvement in such dastardly act is very remote,” he said, but however said that the allegation was being investigated.

“I assure you if anybody is found culpable, the person will be appropriately dealt with according to our laws,” he warned.
