A car loaded with improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and programmed to explode at a major mosque in Kano, Nigeria on Sunday has been disconnected by officials of the Nigeria Police.

Commissioner of Police in the State, Adenrele Shinaba, who disclosed this at a press conference held at the Police Headquarters in Bompai, Kano, explained that the car, a white Peugeot 406 with registration number: AA 513 ZAK, was discovered abandoned at the gate of Isiayaku Rabiu Mosque located at Goron Dutse Qtrs Kano.

He said the car was abandoned on Saturday night and its content programmed to explode on Sunday during a prayer service at the mosque.

He said residents were smart enough to quickly call the attention of the police to the parked car.

“On Saturday, 26 July, an eve to this year’s Eid Fitr celebration by Muslims all over the world, the Kano State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that at about 10:40pm a distress call was received from the members of the community that a Peugeot 406 white in colour with registration number: AA 513 ZAK was discovered abandoned at the gate of Isiayaku Rabiu Mosque located at Goron Dutse Qtrs Kano.

“On receipt of the information, our men led by the EOD personnel were mobilized to the scene and discovered the said vehicle was loaded with IEDs primed to be detonated during today’s Eid Fitr’s Prayers.

“We immediately disconnected and dislodge the EIDs safely without causing any injury or damage,” he said adding that the success was the result of the sensitisation programmes of the police in the State.

He urged citizens of the country to support the command and all the security agencies in the country in the fight against terrorism and all forms of criminal activities.

“On our part, we would continue to give our very best in providing adequate security of lives and properties as well as maintaining law and order in the State,” he promised.
