The Nigerian Army on Friday completed a one-month training for 67 personnel of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) on weapon handling.
NAN reports that the training, which started on 24 June ended on 25 July and was conducted at 146 Battalion, Eburutu Barracks, Calabar.
The NSCDC personnel were trained on stripling and assembling of G3 and AK47 rifles, description of G3 rifle, arms maintenance and shooting positions, among others.
Speaking at the end of the programme, Dr Benito Eze, Cross River Commandant, NSCDC, said the training was organised to prepare the corps on combat readiness.
Eze said that with the intensive personnel training, NSCDC was ready to play its part in mitigating the country’s present security challenges.
“In the past three years, over 350 personnel of the NSCDC in Cross River have been trained by the Nigerian Army.
“And, most recently, some of our personnel had been trained on counter terrorism at the Nigerian Army Training, Centre at Kontagora, Niger State.
“Since the commencement of our training, we have not recorded any incident of accidental discharge and we will never record such by the grace of God,” he said.
He charged the graduating personnel to display a high sense of professionalism, integrity, humility and civility in the performance of their assigned duties.
Governor Liyel Imoke of Cross River charged the graduating personnel to be disciplined in the discharge of their duties.
Imoke urged them to use the skills they acquired in the course of their study to help in maintaining peace and security in the country.
Responding on behalf of his colleagues, Mr Paul Nya, who emerged the overall best participant, pledged to justify the skills they acquired during the training.
Nya commended the NSCDC and Army for training them.
The highlight of the event was the stripling and assembling of G3 and AK47 rifles by personnel of NSCDC.
