Dr Amos Adamu, former FIFA and CAF executive committee member, has advised sports administrators not to be high-handed in tackling sports matters.

Adamu, who spoke to newsmen on Saturday in Abuja, after FIFA lifted the ban it slammed on Nigeria, said the ban would have been avoided if not for the ego of some football administrators.

Amos said the suspension would have been avoided if not for ego, but expressed delight that FIFA lifted the ban. “I am very happy that this suspension is over and we should not always allow problems to get to this level. I want to advise the board of the NFA to see football as a family sports; no matter what challenges we have, we can always sit down and resolve them.

“When you give somebody a ban of 10 years, you should expect him to react and you should consider the offence the person has committed. You should also consider if the person has 10 more years to be in football.

“So, you give punishments that are commensurate to offence; and when you do the wrong thing and you are punished, you have to accept responsibility for what you have done,” Adamu said.

He said that individuals should be encouraged to take part in the development of football in the country.

Adamu, who was also a former Director-General of National Sports Commission (NSC), urged football stakeholders to always follow the rules guiding football to avoid negative consequences.

“We have the statutes of FIFA. Let everybody work within those rules. We should not be having problems with our football every three or four years.

“What FIFA is saying is that you have accepted to be a member and you know what their rules are,’’ he said.

Adamu said that Nigeria should always endeavour to follow the rules laid down by FIFA.
