Senator Paulinus Igwe-Nwagu (PDP Ebonyi Central), has said that zoning of political offices are meant to favour political weaklings in a democratic setting.

He made the statement on Sunday in Abakaliki while speaking to newsmen on his intention to contest the 2015 governorship election in the state.

He said that zoning favours those who were not ready to serve the people and urged other governorship candidates in the state to present their programmes to the electorate.

“We should not sacrifice merit on the alter of zoning.

“Anybody discussing zoning is selfish; if Obama, a black American, can win that country’s presidency, I as an Ezza man and a Nigerian should be allowed to contest for the governorship of the state.

“Our people do not need a weakling who would be favoured by zoning or government nomination, but a strong-willed person who would improve on already established structures,” he said.

Nwagu said he was the most qualified candidate to contest for the governorship seat having served in most political offices available in the country.

“I have been a Councillor, Local Government Chairman, Member of the House of Representatives, and now a Senator.

“I have been practicing politics for the past 36 years,” he said.
