A 40-year old housewife, Shola Afolayan, has been sent to Kirikiri Prisons in Lagos State, western Nigeria, over her husband’s loan.

The mother of five kids stood as guarantor for her husband who borrowed N1.5 million from Mrs Chioma Ohaegbu to set up a business and promised to pay at a fixed date.

But according to Shola, immediately her husband collected the loan, he abandoned her and their children and fled with the money.

Narrating what happened, Chioma said Mr. Afolayan came to her house at 12, Oludegun Street, Ire Akari Estate, Isolo in Lagos and solicited for financial assistance.

Ohaegbu said before she gave him the money, Afolayan took her to his house at Isheri-Oshun in Lagos and introduced her to his wife and children, assuring her that he would not disappoint her if given the loan.

Then, he asked his wife to sign as his guarantor that he would pay the loan at a fixed date, which she did.

Ohaegbu said when Afolayan did not pay back the loan as promised, she contacted his wife who told her that he had escaped with the money.

Ohaegbu reported the case to the police and Shola was arrested and charged with conspiracy and stealing under the Criminal Code before Ejigbo Magistrate’s Court sitting in Lagos.

Shola pleaded not guilty to the charges. She told the court that her husband refused to show up and when she contacted him on phone, he asked her and the children to sort themselves out with his creditor and switched off the phone.

The presiding Magistrate, M.B. Folami granted her bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in like sum. The suspect was, however, remanded in prison custody pending when she will fulfill her bail conditions.

The matter was adjourned till 26 May, 2014.
