The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has assured foreign investors of a conducive environment for those intending to invest in the nation’s power sector.

This was contained in a statement issued by Dr Usman Arabi, NERC’s Head of Public Affairs in Abuja on Friday.

It stated that the NERC Chairman, Dr Sam Amadi, gave the assurance when the Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, Mustafa Pulat, led a delegation of construction experts to his office.

It said that Amadi, who was represented by Dr Abba Ibrahim, a Commissioner at NERC, described the visit as timely in view of the privitisation of the sector.

The statement stated that the Nigeria had a policy that promotes local content partnership as part of efforts to grow the sector.

It said that the NERC has put in place a framework that encourages long term contracts for those participating in the power sector and availability of gas for the power plants.

“What we are encouraging in the commission is to see to a sustainable framework for long term contract-based electricity market which includes gas,” he said.

It stated that the ambassador in his remarks said that the delegation comprised large and prominent Turkish companies in various construction sectors who jointly engage in hydro-power dam construction.

The statement added that the delegation which had investments in Turkey and some African countries was interested in investing in Nigeria’s power sector because of recent positive developments in the sector.
