Abia government denies editor's arrest

The Abia government, on Sunday, said it was not aware of the arrest of the Associate Editor of the Sun Newspapers, Mr Ebere Nwabara.

Nwabara was arrested in Lagos on Friday and after being taken to Sholoki and Oyingbo police stations in Lagos, he was moved to Aba.

The Chief Press Secretary to Gov. Theodore Orji of Abia, Mr Charles Ajunwa, told NAN on Sunday in Aba that the state government did not know about Nwabara’s arrest.

However, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Geoffrey Ogbonna, confirmed Nwabara’s arrest in an interview with NAN on Sunday.

The police spokesman added that Nwabara was arrested by the state Criminal Investigation Department but he did not have details of his crime.

Both the journalists’ union, NUJ and the Guild of Editors have called for the release of the editor.
