Some retirees of the Lagos State Sports Council on Thursday appealed to the state government to settle their retirement benefits, some five years leaving service .

The spokesperson of the retirees, known simply as Kazeem, told the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN that the unpaid benefits had subjected them to untold hardships.

The 64-year-old Kazeem, who retired in 2009 said he and 30 other colleagues, however, made fruitless efforts to get the council to pay them.

“We have all exhausted our energies at our various jobs during our 35 years in active service, it is worrisome that the state’s pension scheme has failed to settle our benefits,’’ Kazeem said.

Kazeem, who said he was employed in 1974 into the administrative department of the council at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Complex, Yaba noted that they had completed all necessary documentations.

“On behalf of my colleagues, I am appealing to the state government to pay up our pensions. We are now retired and are tired of coming to the sports council all of the time,’’ he said.

When NAN sought the reaction of Bashir Agunloye, Public Relations Officer of the council, he said he was not aware of the pension issue.
