The incident happened about 9 p.m. Wednesday night at the Car park of the airport, which was brimming with passengers travelling to Europe, America and the Middle East.

One of the robbers was killed in the exchange of gunfire.

During the shootout that lasted for some minutes, passengers at the departure hall of the airport were asked to lie down to avoid stray bullets, witnesses said.

Yakubu Dati, spokesperson of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, who briefed journalists today said the robbery attack took place at the car park of the airport and not inside the terminal building, as earlier reported.

He said the slain police officers were not deployed to the airport by FAAN, but had apparently come to escort someone to the vicinity.

Their identities could not be ascertained at press time as calls to DENNIS IFIJEN, PPRO Airport Police Command were not returned. A text message was not also returned.

Dati said FAAN Managing Director, George Uriesi, has directed all illegal persons operating at the car park to leave or be evicted.
