Giwa Ayoka Sikirat, a 53-year old grandmother, has been arrested with cocaine hidden in her hair, Nigeria’s anti-drug agency said on Monday.

Sikirat was apprehended at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, NAIA, Abuja, the Nigerian Capital, while on her way to Pakistan, the agency said.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, said the suspect was arrested at the weekend following the discovery and seizure of a kilogramme of white powdery substance that tested positive for cocaine$

“The suspect, Giwa Ayoka Sikirat concealed the drug in her beautiful hair style while trying to board an Ethiopian airline Flight ET 910 to Pakistan enroute Addis Ababa and Dubai,” NDLEA said in a statement.

NDLEA Abuja Airport commander, Mr Hamisu Lawan, was quoted as saying: “There was no prior information on Sikirat as the drug was detected when a female officer carried out a body frisk on her during outward screening of passengers.”

Lawan said a 59-year old suspected accomplice, Joseph Umunna, an indigene of Anambra State, who brought Sikirat to the airport, was also arrested.

NDLEA said the drug was concealed in her hair in Lagos before she was taken to Abuja by her sponsors.

“Both suspects will soon be charged to court in line with the NDLEA Act for unlawful exportation and conspiracy to export 1kg of cocaine,” NDLEA.

The agency said Sikirat attended St. Louis Primary School, Mushin and Isolo Secondary School both in Lagos, southwest Nigeria.

She also attended School of Fashion and Design in Lagos in 1994. She hails from Kwara State.

  3. Kaze A.

What baffles me is that hardly do you have any drug crime commited without having an Igbo connection. As i was reading the story i was praying that no Igbo is involved this time, only to be disappointed. I think our laws are too lenient for any meaningful cleansing to be made as far as criminal activities are concerned. Shortly someone is going to tell you it is because the government is not doing well. So sad! or is it woman empowerment?

  4. OGBENI NAIJA

Ori iya, yio de ade cocaine. This shameful head must wear a “crown” of cocaine even at 53! This reminds one of that Owo Ondo State prince, a Director in Ministry caught with his own cocaine inside Onions in London some years back. I think Gbenle is his name. Just add the name of one of the prominent kings and you’d complete the puzzle. He was detained by dogs!

    Prince jailed for smuggling coke

Seventeen of the 23 onions contained cocaine
An African prince who tried to smuggle cocaine concealed inside onions into the UK has been jailed for 12 years.
Prince Adegbenie Olateru-Olagbegi, 55, thought the onion odour would hide his cache, worth £163,000, as he arrived at Heathrow Airport from Lagos, Nigeria.

He also packed shrimps and other pungent dried fish in his luggage – but failed to put off a drugs sniffer dog.

He denied all knowledge of the 17 hollowed-out onions containing 3.21kg of cocaine found in his luggage.

Max the sniffer dog smelt through the other pungent odours of 23 onions and the fish as the prince walked through the Nothing to Declare channel.

He had had more luck at customs in Lagos, where he was waived through by customs officials.

Sentencing him at Snaresbrook Crown Court in London on Tuesday, Recorder Farouk Ahmed said: “You took advantage of your good character and high social standing in Nigeria to cause Nigerian Customs to waive you through.”

The prince’s barrister, Gideon Cammerman, said the prince had been a “simple courier”.

“Prince Adegbenie Olateru-Olagbegi’s life, needless to say, now lies in ruins.”

The prince denied all knowledge of the cocaine in his luggage
However, Mr Ahmed said: “A man of your very considerable standing…and with your connections in high places in Nigeria, is highly unlikely to have been carrying these drugs for someone else and certainly not for some small reward.

“You were not acting as some hapless drugs mule.”

The prince was arrested in March this year and convicted of smuggling on 1 September following an eight-day trial at Middlesex Guildhall Crown Court in London.

He told his trial that his father is king to 450,000 subjects in Owo in southern Nigeria and that he has 149 siblings.

He had been involved in anti-drug work in Nigeria, run for office, and been a director of several companies, the court heard. He was also involved with several organisations which promoted good behaviour and Christian values among young men in Nigeria. His lawyer said he had faced “public pillory” in Nigeria since his arrest.

The evil that men do doth live after them. At 55? Could he have finished serving time for his crime, i mean the so-called Prince Gbenle Olateru Olagbegi. Na wa for the so-called Prince o. Thank God Britain is no respecter of Princes and Governors. Ask Alamiyesegha, Ibori and others. By the way has Alamiyesagha finished the time in London?

        • OKODORO ORO

Alameyesigha ke? the old time or a fresh one? Learned he is awaiting the highest honor in the land from his ward. Jonathan must be teaching OBJ some bitter lessons in how not to help a simple looking man. OBJ took so much for granted. Jonathan is baring his fangs gradually. I hope OBJ would not be the first casualty, while Okupe inflicts the lacerations. Interesting times!
