For the timely intervention of Governor Ibikunle Amosun, a repeat of yesterday’s fracas would have occurred at the Ogun State House of Assembly, where pugilist lawmakers broke the mace and held sessions where they suspended one another and even appointed a pro-tempore speaker.

The stage was set for the showdown, with four legislators, including Remmy Hazzan, leader of the Group of 14 that suspended the speaker, being barred from entering the assembly. Policemen keeping sentry told them to keep away as they had been ‘suspended’. The remaining members of the group, also refused to enter, threatening to hold their plenary under the tree.

The standoff was on when Governor Amosun stepped in and called all the legislators to a meeting in his office.

Addressing newsmen later, Amosun said the truce he brokered among the 26 lawmakers was the biggest birthday gift this present administration has given the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo posthumously.

Addressing newsmen, the Speaker of the House, Surajudeen Ishola Adekunbi apologised to the good people of the State for the ugly incident of yesterday, adding that the legislators are now back as one big family now as they have put the incident behind them.
