Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Nigeria’s State of Osun on Friday distributed school uniforms worth N800 million to students in the state, to reduce the financial burden on parents.

Aregbesola said on the occasion in Ede, Osun, that the concept of the uniform in public schools was a state government’s policy.

“The concept of the school uniform stemmed from the government’s policy of touching lives in all ramifications.

“The material and the colour of the school uniform are the same amongst the students, to create a sense of belonging in them.

“The uniform will also promote unity among the students without discrimination on the basis of social-economic status and religious backgrounds,’’ Aregbesola said.

He said that the state ranked 34th in the allocation from the federation account, with a monthly figure of N3.4 billion. Aregbesola said in spite of the state’s meagre resources, it remained the highest spender in the basic educational sector in the country.

The governor advised the students to take their studies seriously, to justify the government’s huge spending in the sector.

“We are injecting so much into the educational sector because you give us joy, and with your cooperation, we hope that tomorrow will be better than today.

“Of course, we believe there is no substitute to education.

“Education is our passport to the future, tomorrow belongs to those that prepare for it today.

“I have a total conviction that our efforts will make you to be studious and prepare for your tomorrow today,’’ the governor said.

Aregbesola said the government would soon distribute about 150,000 mini-computers to all the students in the senior secondary class in the public schools
