Africans win Brussels last IAAF event

Kenya’s Gilbert Kirui and Ruti Aga of Ethiopia, both teenagers, have won the men and women’s events, respectively, at the IRIS Lotto Crosscup event in Brussels.

This was at the finals of the IAAF Cross Country Permit meet of the year.

The 18-year-old Kenyan broke away from a strong leading group at the halfway mark to eventually win the men’s 10.5km in 33.02 mins, just nine seconds ahead of compatriot Alex Kibet.

Tsegay Tuemay of Eritrea was third in 33.27 mins.

In the 6-km women’s race, Aga, also 18 years old, won in 20.48 mins, after a close battle with Ireland’s 2011 and 2012 European champion Fionnuala Britton.

Another Ethiopian, Enili Gebriwoth, was third in 21.20 mins.
