40,000 Nigerian teachers to be retrained

Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Professor Ruqayyatu Rufa’i, has said in Lagos that 40,000 teachers would be retrained under the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) capacity building programme before the end of the year.

The minister said at the opening ceremony of a retraining workshop that the teachers would be drawn from primary and junior secondary schools.

She said that the capacity building workshops would be organised by National Teachers Institute.

The minister said the Federal Government was committed to improving the quality of teaching and learning at the basic education level.

She said that teachers at the junior secondary level would be trained on English Language, Mathematics, Social Studies, Basic Science, Basic Technology and communication skills.

The minister restated the commitment of the Federal Government to accord great priority to education.

“Countries which have made the greatest progress in reducing poverty in recent decades are those which have combined effective and equitable investment in education with sound economic policies,’’ she said.

Rufa’i said that primary school teachers would be trained on “basic teaching methods, communication, management skills and Information Communication Technology’’.

“The training will assist and equip teachers to acquire, develop and refine their knowledge of subject matter and pedagogical skills for effective performance in the classroom,’’ she said.

Dr Precious Gbenemol, the Senior Special Adviser to the President on MDGs, said that 722,736 teachers had benefited from the programme since its inception in 2006.

“In 2006, 141,144 teachers were trained; 156,592 in 2008; 120,000 in 2009; while 140,000 and 125,000 in 2010 and 2011 respectively and 40,000 in 2012,’’ she said.

Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola of Lagos State, commended the Federal Government for its continued effort to reposition the teaching profession.

Represented by Mrs Olayinka Oladunjoye, the Commissioner for Education, the governor said the capacity building workshops would enhance the performance of teachers.

“I have no doubt that the workshops for teachers will go a long way in refreshing the minds of our teachers and expose them to modern and innovative methods of teaching,’’ he said.
