Secondary school students, who are embarking on Christmas break this week must avoid sex, drug and crime to remain safe and secure during the yuletide period, a non-government organisation, Youth Concern and Development Initiatives (YCDI-Africa), has counselled.

YCDI-Africa’s Executive Director, Ms. Onyinye Onyemobi and other guest speakers at an interactive session held at Ogudu Senior High School in Lagos, southwest Nigeria, advised students to replace negative acts with positive ideas to avoid violence and crime.

YCDI-Africa in collaboration with Health and Life Planning Club, a school-based youth club, organisers of the interactive forum, identified public schools in Nigeria as breeding ground for violence.

According to Erica Licht, a Fulbright fellow from the United States, students must replace guns, drugs and fights with love and care.

To Mrs. Lydia Onuoha, a member of the Lagos State School Basic Education Improvement Team, teenagers in secondary schools should not be involved in sexual relationship as this endangers their lives, increases the risk of contracting HIV and reduces their academic performances.

“They must focus their energy on activities that would enhance their physical and mental development,” she said.

Mrs. Eunice Adetola, Founder and Executive Director, Esther’s Group for Women’s Development in Nigeria, urged teenagers to be security conscious during Christmas.

She advised youths to postpone their desire for luxury to a later date when they would have completed their studies.

“Once you complete your education and start working, there is nothing you cannot afford on your own,” Adetola said.
