Nigeria is now the worst country for a woman to have a child, according to the 2013 ranking by the international organisation, Economic Intelligence Unit, a sister company of the popular Economist magazine.

In the report, which was released yesterday and aimed at knowing the best environment for children to be born safe and healthy, the organisation said its research carried out in 80 countries shows that Nigeria took 80th position in the 2013 Where-To-Be-Born Index.

As a result of this position, the EIU said Nigeria is the worst country to have a child, because it has the lowest score of 4.74 points out of 10.

While the index ranks Switzerland as the best country to be born in with 8.22 points, Kenya came 79th scoring 4.91 and South Africa got the 53rd position and was declared as the best placed African country with a score of 5.89.

Algeria was declared the 54th country with 5.86 points on the research and the second best place to have a baby in Africa.

The United States which came out first in the 1988 survey of the organisation dropped to the 16th position with Germany as they both had 7.38 points.

The EIU said it carried out its study measuring with key issues such as crime, trust in public institutions, income per head, health of family life, government policies as well as the opinions of citizens concerning their happiness.

Director of the EIU Country Forecasting Services, Laza Kekic, said there had been only a very modest upward trend in average life satisfaction scores in developed nations, whereas average income has grown substantially over the decade.
