Kalabaris Protest Over Plans To Cede 5 Communities To Bayelsa

Elders and Youths of Kalabari Wednesday staged a peaceful protest on the major streets of Port Harcourt , southsouth Nigeria, and to Government House to submit their petition against alleged moves to cede five major oil producing communities to Bayelsa state.

The peaceful protest which started with a rally at the famous Isaac Adaka Boro Park located along Port Harcourt/Aba Expressway opposite Mile One,Diobu Bridge took the protesters to Government House amidst tight security.

They were received by Mr. Tele Ikuru, the Deputy Governor of Rivers State, on behalf of Governor Chibuike Amaechi, who commended them for the peaceful protest, pledged to relay their protest to his boss, who will take their grievances to President Goodluck Jonathan.

The Kalabari people who had earlier staged a similar protest in Abuja at the office of the National Boundary Commission and Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Commission, RMAFC, had complained in their petition that the Federal Government wants to cede their communities to Bayelsa for pure political reasons because of the oil wealth and vowed that they would resist the move.

The protesters carried placards with different inscriptions such as “Don’t Steal Our OIL Wealth,” “Peace is not weakness,” “Don’t Allow Niger Delta Boil Again”, etc.
