Gunmen on Wednesday fired shots, injuring some police officers, before kidnapping the vice chancellor of a state university in southeastern Nigeria, a police spokesman said.

“At about 11:30 am (10.30 GMT) today, gunmen who laid in ambush kidnapped the vice chancellor of Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Professor Cyprian Onyeji, after shooting and injuring policemen around him,” Ebere Amaraeze told AFP on telephone.

As Onyeji approached the entrance of the university, on the outskirts of Enugu city, the gunmen swooped on his car, fired sporadically before capturing the rector, he said.
