Heavy Rain Devastates Ado-Ekiti

A rain storm in the early hours of Monday caused havoc in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital.

The downpour blew away the roofs of many houses in the affected areas.

Most hit were Fajuyi extension, Opopogbooro, Bawa, Temidire, Adebayo as well as Adeun.

The downpour, which began in some areas at about 7:25p.m on Sunday evening, continued into the early hours of Monday in many areas.

Also affected were walls of some houses which pulled down as well as some major and intra-township roads within the city which were completely blocked by the huge volume of water.

Some residents of Iworoko Road close to the Ekiti State University and Ayeni Garage said that the incessant flooding was due to poor drainage facilities in the area.

Two of the residents, Mrs Oluwatoyo Jinadu and Mr Kolawole Raphael, said the impact of damage in the area was devastating.

They called on the state government to come to the aid of victims.

The Chairman of the state Waste Management Authority, Chief Adebayo Morakinyo, attributed the flooding to indiscriminate dumping of refuse in on unauthorised places.

He advised residents to shun unhygienic practices and dispose their refuse in designated areas to check flooding.
