This is a well deserved ‘thank you’ for a Greek gift. Am sure even Abiola would have preferred not being honoured at all than being dishonoured with such a controversial gift … Goodluck Nigerians!!!

  2. Jerry

But wat can we say abt dis GEJ u want to honor someone who died for democrazy wit UNILAG, why not abuja stadium? is d honor giving to him must b only in yoruba land? is GEJ telling nigerian dat dis MOSHOOD ABIOLA died for only yoruba pple? i do not see anything wrong in giving MKO honor is even over due but dat honor must b ind federal capital of nigeria Abuja then he can now add UNILAG cus dis MKO deserve much more dan dat

  3. Kazeem

PDP political agenda of wining 2015 election is not by changing University name to have south west vote. Why not building a University named as such in ogun state. This begining of failure, re-strategies.

    • Students of unilag should stop dis madness $ take dat name Moshood Abiola university or u leave the school.

      • amina

can u wake up tomorrow and the head of your family tells you your name is no longer nkechi without you complaining? sister, it is good for you to reason before you say anything.
this is not about madness but about fighting for what is right, in spite of the fact that he is mr president, he should have at least consulted the university governing council.
the sch administration has built this brand for 50 years and he can not just wake up to say he feels like changing the name.
university of lagos is the foremost nigerian tertiary institution brand to the whole world and it does not need a change of name.
there are 9 new universities waiting to be named, he should pick one of those if he feels like honoring mko with a university.

I don’t know the problem with us in Nigeria. What has changing of name has to do with ur academics. Many school in Nigeria had their name change without any problem. As for me,am happy about the name bcos it has broken th EGO of uni lag stident, whereby they don’t regonise any other students from other school.KUDOS to GEJ,pls by May 29 next year, please kindly change the following school too. They are Uni-port,Uni- Ben and U.i.Good bless GEJ.

        • @ aminat, nkechi is somhow right, though d school may nt b a gud choice bt d fact remains dat d student are fightin against notin bcos dey ought 2 fight 4 wat quality educatin wil luk like and nt d name, if many luk at som names given 2 schs dat means most people wont b educated. The name remains in d heart and nt wat u’l defend in d labour market.

      • odion

U r senseless for dis post.I guess u neva attended a University.Mumu somebody. If we don’t go home,u can bring your family soldiers to send us home.mtcheew!

  4. Frankfil

Well!!! I really do not see anything wrong with the renaming of unilag to maulag.yes! However, all wot we seeing here hasn’t amounted to all these protesting.whether, the institution is close or not. THE NAME HAS COME TO STAY..let us accept it in good faith!!

Student and lecturers of maulag, pls go the classmate!!”

  5. YES MKO ABIOLA DESERVE MORE THAN THAT DUE TO HIS STRUGGLE FOR THE ENTHRONEMENT OF DEMOCRACY IN NIGERIA,I BELIEVE IS LONG OVERDUE BUT WHY NOT NAMING ABUJA NATIONAL STADIUM AFTER HIM DUE TO HIS IMMENSE CONTRIBUTION TOWARD THE DEVELOPMENT OF SPORT IN AFRICAN THAT THEY CALL HIM PILLARS OF SPORT IN AFRICA, THEN AGAIN FOR THE REAL JUSTICE TO PREVAIL WHY DONT FG PROBE THE CIRCUMSTANCES THAT SURROUNDED THE ANNULMENT OF THE ELECTION? SINCE THE PERPETRATORS OF THE DASTARDLY ACT WERE ALL STILL LIVING WITH THEIR MAIN LEADER (IBB).
I SAID FOR THE REAL JUSTICE TO PREVAIL LET FG INSTAL HIM POST HUMOUSLY AS PRESIDENT OF THE FED REP OF NIGERIA,WITH MORE HONOURS.

  6. Akeem

Nonsence Nonsencical Nonsence… The worstest president we ever have @ d histroy of Nigeria… Students slept in Unilag and Woke up in Moshood Abiola University, what a miracle.. Nigeria President GoodLuck Jonathan is full of surprises,January 1st he gave us a New Year Gift by removing subsidy,Today Democracy Day, He Also gave us another Gift which is renamed Unilag University to Mashood Abiola University!! Beware October 1st You will just hear that Nigeria has been Sold τ̅☺ China!!!

    • RAPHAEL

you are right, i think he deserve a greater honour in federal capital territory.GEJ needs south west vote in 2015.But i think Nigerians are wiser than that now.

  7. Asebiomo

Unife is a leading University even renowned than Unilag now OAU. Let those making noise go and find something worthwile doing.

  8. Please Ife was changed to OAU and not Abuja Stadium. Nothing is wrong with Changing Unilag to Moshood Abiola University. Bury your pride and let life continue in Akoka.

  9. Waooooo what a trick president we have he waned to abracadabra us in south west he as fail him self and he remain failure for now, let him wake up from his sleep and do what we elect him to do i mean good governance if he want nigerian to happy with him.we are wiser than his Greek gift

  10. Paul

Nigerians! Now i kno how difcult it’s 2 rule, how d 1 satisfy u,why is GEJ so rewarded by clueless cmunity called Unilag?0BJ spent 8yrs,cldnt remember 2 honor MKO,Sonekan declared June 12 a dead issue, his kinsmen seized optunity created via hs matreydom 2 get power.Afenifere,Activists,SUBS cried n lamented dat MKO be immortalxd, all 2 deaf ears. Now,d Otuoke son led Govt out of passion did MKO honour n pipu stil condemn.0BJ n d rest shd cover dia faces in shame. But den,d Govt’s decision is final,GEJ IS GREAT O

  11. femola

is dis d democracy dat MkO died for or democrazy. Chainging d name does’t have any influence on us a citizen of nig, but what nigerians need now as a country is totally d/f frm dis trash. What is he doing abt the issues of … 1bokoharam 2minimum wages 3our roads and eletricity. 4our economy 5the implementation of sch, feels in our univesity. So many of them 2 count. So wht are we celebrating in changing d name of univercity in democracy day. Total rubbish.

  12. Awonbiowo

May i ask if changing of nomenclature has any effect on teaching and learning in Great Akoka. What if the University is named after Obasanjo. Pl let us keep peace. Our focus should be on how to produce qualitative and quantitative education

  13. ADE

Should GEJ be crucified 4 renaming Unilag afta MKO?Im passionately surprised 2 c an academic cmunity as unilag behave as ANIMALS.I agree with Mr Paul dat 0bj n succesive govts shld hv done dat.Isnt it a shame dat Bayelsa born ruler came 2 reverse injustice afta 14yrs.But d same students went to d street in solidarity 4 MKO,what has VC wake keep got to do wit May 29th?D name Unilag, heenn,is gone 4eva,MAU has com 2 stay.Do u call ds CULTISTS demonstrating students? They lack courtesy n .virtue lol.SHAME ON U.

  14. Jake

GEJ is just a dumb man full of unpleasant surprises, surrounded by insensitive sycophants called “Advisers”. Which way Nigeria

  15. felas boy

    What is the relevance of
changing UNI LAG to MAU? why not University of Abuja ? 1. this is more
of a POLITICAL MOVE than a recognition of Democracy and the Martyr CHief
Moshood Abiola. To me The EAGLES SQUARE wld have been preferable for
name change to MKO SQUARE. And for those who said its just like how the
name University of ife was changed to OBAFEMI AWOLOWO university, u
have completely goofed. CHIEF OBAFEMI AWOLOWO may his gentle soul rest
in peace was a herald of education for the south west. indeed the nation
at large. idolizing him with an institution in the west (emphasis on
the WEST) was just very appropriate. This in the contrast was a move
to appeal to the WEST , a TROJAN horse for westerners to recognize PDP
as a propagator of democracy a goof that limited the fight of democracy
by CHief MKO to the west alone. SO lets start renaming other
UNiversities in other region to names that for freedom and democracy , (
UNIPORT to CHIEF DIM OJUKU UNIVERSITY) lol . what a joke Jonathan is
already seeking a second term inspite of the challenges the nation faces
insecurity and fuel subsidy scams, comatose customs, wasters in the
captial market, impending food crises. etc just one year in the seat.
NO these greedy insatiable political wolves only think of their pockets
they dont think about the common Nigerian in any form. just shows how unpopular GEJ has become.

  16. ADE

JAKE, U call a PHD holder,a fine gentle man,a civilised nigerian citisen,AU,ECOWAS leader of repute,d Commander In Chief of d armed forces,Federal R epubic of Nigeria, thd giant of africa a dumb? Im dissapointed,It wil be a major breakthrough in ur family if today u ar employed to clean d toilet of his personal building in Yenagoa.Mind ur speech talking to 0ur presidoo

  17. CSO

At least, the hypocrisy of the Yorubas has now come into open. Students protesting name change, Alumni unhappy…… So all the noise about June 12 and MKO is only mouthful and not something majority believe in. Unilag is a national monument and a prestigious university worth naming after an icon MKO Abiola was and still is. But for Abiola’s love for humanity, Nigeria should be a war-ton country by now, because countries that witness war don’t get back to their glorious past. Sadly, many of the students protesting were bereft of history and not ready to learn from history, otherwise, they would have been made aware that UNILAG was the hotbed for the actualisation of June 12 and Abiola’s release. Some of us who were students at the time will never forget the human sacrifices of many Unilag students killed in those terrible years. In fact, many of the students protesting wouldn’t have been brought into this world as their parents would have been killed if MKO had acceded to calls then, to fund a rebellion movement, but the humane man he said “How can I wage war against my people who voted for me”? To all the protesting students, the Alumni and those who oppose this, particularly those who have been faking their support for MKO’s immortalisation, I say, shame on your utter hypocrisy.

  18. bada moshood

d word mistake is d plight of nigeria, we gain our independent @ d wrong tym wch was a mistake dat i tink we can neva correct, electin dat man as our first citizen was another mistake bcos how can a reasonable man wake up and take impromtu decisions, first one, fuel subsidy, second one, unilag to maulag. Only God knows wat d third one wl b. In my own opinion, unilag to maulag is not a wrong tin, but it was taken @ d wrong tym. My advice to d student of maulag is to go bak and move on with dr section, bcos d schl fee is still d same, d grade point has not bn touch ida, or do u want d third decision to b changin of GP to wat wl not favour u? Nigeria is a country we all can neva stop takin abt.

  19. if goodluck want to do such a thing,i didn’t say dat is nt gud to honor mko abiola, but jonathan has to discuss d issue with d parliamentary of govt and lectureers so dat they wil be aware about d changing of d university’s name, thank you all.

  20. wole

Goodluck, you should have named Aso Rock, our seat of govt after MKO, and by the way you should get busy fighting Boko Haram and leave trivial stuffs alone.

  21. AYO

I don’t really see anything bad in honoring an ICON, but I just think MKO remembrance is over due. MAULAG or UNILAG all that matter is still LAG. Changing of name does not devalue LAG standard

  22. CAN U IMAGINE COMING OUT WITH A CERTIFICATE THAT READS MOSHOOD..AB………, THEN IT GETS TOO HARD TO PRONOUNCE …………TOO BAD. MANY DID NOT BARGAIN FOR IT. JONATHAN IS THOROUGHLY CONFUSED. TAKE HEART MY PEOPLE

  23. dat ur president wants 2 deceive yorubas, wat do u expect 4fm a man dat hav no focus n planning 2come 4 president 2015.mko did not die 4 yorubas alone, june 12 should b honour 4 mko as democrazy day nt may 29 or unilag.

  24. portable

It may be painful but it doesn’t change your course, your Life, your prestige,or wat u are. U are going 2 just take heart (pls)

  25. Iyabo

Av neva see dis kind of mr president in my life, changin of d sch name is dat d next to do, even if u want to change d sch name, cant u av a meetin wit d board mgt, u just woke up and change d name just lik dat, bokoharam problem u no solve, even fuel subsidy u no solve, d increament of electicity nothin is done abt it, mr president abeg sleep three times and wake up, think, u ar too dull for my liking.

  26. ismaila adegbola

in fact, it really saddened my heart when seeing these pictures of protests by student of unilag; really, they do not know what they are doing? ABIOLA deserves more than this, abiola put all his resources in upgrading our education sector, so if students of unilag could against this honor, it means they do not read history of abiola and also many of them were kids when abiola is promoting education, democracy, sport etc in nigeria. in cameroon that i am residing, i know how cameroonians are talking positively about abiola because they also enjoyed his wealth. jonathan think well and know the value of democracy. too late is better than never, this is god’s time! happy democracy day for nigeria and nigerians. democracy for ever! congratulationsssssssss

  27. Ope Alege

I would say that people who do not have a rich history will not apprecaite why someone who has one should preserve what he has. People who do not appreciate hard work or success, wil not understand why some people work hard for success. people who do not have a name to preserve will always be in a hurry to rubbish others in a slight opportunity. UNILAG is a name which has been built for over 50 years which has resonated within and outside the shores of the great nation, a name that many previous and current students, and past and current professors have built to represent excellence and outstanding success, a name which has been printed in numeroud books and publications depicting tales of wonders, achievement, pain and laughter. it is name which truly has inspire many of us past students to dream of glories and prestige. but now within the stoke of pen our president has chnaged that forever.
So what is in a name, A LOT REALLY. Really, Unilag was a name to remember.
    Adieu UNILAG

  28. John Obuh

IN FACT,EVERYBODY HAVE SPOKEN AND THEY HAVE SPOKEN WELL.BUT THE QUESTION IS THAT,WHAT IF GEJ NAME UNILAG AFTER LAMIDI ADEDIBU UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS (LAULAG) WHAT WOULD STUEDENTS DO?LATE ABIOLA IS GONE WITH HIS MONEY,REPUTE AND RECOGNITION FACING HIS WARANT IN THE GRAVE NONE THINKS ABOUT IT BUT RATHER ENGAGE ON CHANGING OF NAME,WHAT A RUBBISH!
