Man Jailed For Stealing General Overseer’s Bible

A magistrate’s court in Ejigbo, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria, has ordered a suspect, Johnson Oloye, to be remanded in prison custody after he was docked for stealing a Bible from a church. The Bible belonged to the General Overseer of the church. But he claimed he wanted to use it to spread the gospel.

The 34-year old Oloye, was arraigned before an Ejigbo magistrate’s court, Lagos for stealing the Bible which the police said costs N4,000.

He had told the police that the Bible found on him was for the preaching of the gospel. But he did not explain how he managed to enter the church and steal it.

Oloye was alleged to have broken into Covenant of Peace Prophetic International Church, Toluwani bus stop on Ikotun/Ijegun road on the outskirts of Lagos.

The Bible belongs to Prophet Adeboye Sampson, founder of the church.

He was charged to court for stealing contrary to and punishable Section 390 of the Criminal Code.

When the charge was read to him, he pleaded not guilty.

The presiding magistrate, Mrs. M. B. Folami granted him bail in the sum of N5,000 with one surety in like sum.

The matter was adjourned till 22 March 2012. He was remanded in prison custody because none of his relations showed up to perfect his bail.
