Acid Attack Victim Needs N24m For Surgery In Canada

Miss Franca Ogbu, a 100-level student of Federal University of Technology, Yola, who was sprayed with acid by a fellow student needs more than N24 million for medical treatment in Canada.

She was attacked on 5 May in the institution by a student who was said to have approached her for friendship, a request she was said to have rebuffed. She has been in pains since then and needs the money for surgery to ease her pains.

The Benue House of Assembly on Tuesday condemned the acid attack on Ogbu.

Mr Nick Eworo, who represents Obi Local Government where Ogbu hails from, moved the motion for the lawmakers’ intervention at plenary.

The lawmaker said that although the name of the culprit had yet to be known, information reaching him indicated that he is from Anambra.

He said the culprit was arrested by the police and later released for reasons yet to be made known to the public.

Eworo informed the House that Ogbu now needs more than N24 million for medical treatment in Canada.

Speaker TerhemenTarzoor, in his comment, urged the state government to liaise with its Anambra counterpart to investigate the matter and bring the culprit to justice.

Tarzoor also enjoined the state government to immediately intervene and assist the victim to enable her receive adequate medical treatment.

Dr Stephen Onmeje, the Deputy Speaker, Baba Odeh and Ianna Jato urged the law enforcement agencies to intensify efforts in the investigation of the matter and ensure that the perpetrator was brought to book.

Mrs Dorathy Mato, a member representing Ikyan State Constituency, advised men against sexual harassment, noting that it was becoming a recurring decimal and portraying the country in bad light.

She admonished her colleagues to make an in-house donation to enable the victim receive some medical care and thereafter prevail on the executive to assist the victim.
