The Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, on Tuesday said the developments at the Lagos council polls had strengthened the call for a state police in line with “true federalism”.

The party made the call in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja

The statement said, “the well-worn argument that state police will be subject to abuse, has been debunked by the role of the police in the Lagos state council polls.

‘’The Federal Government is daily abusing its hold on the federal police, as it were and things could only get better with a state police.’’

The statement also alleged that the PDP- led administration and the police planned to destabilise what was ordinarily a peaceful and well-organised election for the benefit of the PDP in the state.

“Efforts were made to drag other security agencies into the mix in a desperate attempt to concoct an undeserved victory for a party that is almost non-existent in Lagos state.

“But the power of the people, exercised through their votes, won the day, to the chagrin of the anarchists, who are now crying blue murder,’’ the statement said.

According to the statement, security agencies encouraged the “PDP thugs” to chase officials of the LASIEC to safer location to collate and announce results.

The statement also described criticism of the council polls by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Prof. Rufai Alkali, as insincere and badly expressed.

It said the reaction of the PDP amounted to double standards “which is the same reason that Nigeria is unravelling before their (PDP) very eyes’’.

“The party talks about law and order but destabilises the component states,’’ the statement said.

NAN recalls that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has alleged that Saturday’s local government election in Lagos State was marred by irregularities.

Prof. Rufai Alkali, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, said in a statement in Abuja on Monday that “the PDP wishes to express its profound sadness and total disappointment with the conduct of the polls.”

The statement alleged that the election was massively rigged and manipulated by the state electoral body in favour of the ACN.
