A mobile court established by the FRSC in Asaba on Monday convicted and fined a motorist, Benson Omenogor, N65,000 for attempting to abduct a female officer of the commission.

Omenogor was arrested during an operation by the FRSC to enforce compliance with road safety regulations.

Omenogor was directed to stop by the FRSC officer, but he disobeyed, which prompted the officer to enter his vehicle to prevent him from speeding off.

It was alleged that rather than stop, the convict sped off, but was chased by other officers on patrol, which led to his arrest on the Asaba-Onitsha Expressway.

When he was arraigned, Omemogor told the Chief Magistrate, Mr. Nnamdi Onyekwe, that he did not intend to abduct the FRSC officer, but only went to make a U-turn.

Onyekwe was, however, convicted and fined him N65,000 for attempting to abduct the FRSC officer, number plate violation, dangerous driving and obstructing a Road Marshal in the performance of his official duty.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 132 motorists were prosecuted for various road traffic offences, while 123 were convicted, nine cautioned and discharged, with 19 given mitigation of fines.

The most common offences were seat belt violation, riding motorcycle without helmets, number plate violation, overloading and dangerous driving.

Mrs. Patricia Emeordi, Head of Operations, Delta Command of the FRSC, said the defaulters, irrespective of their positions in the society, would henceforth pay the penalty of disobeying road traffic rules and regulations.

She said the special operation “zero tolerance to road traffic crashes” was an intervention programme by the FRSC, aimed at reducing accidents during the “ember” months.

The Sector Commander, Mr. Luka Ikpi, said the operation was to instil sanity in road users and make them comply with traffic regulations.
