FCT Permanent Secretary, Dr. Biodun Olorunfemi, has added his voice to calls by some Nigerians for government to retain and sustain the NYSC scheme.

Olorunfemi said in Abuja on Thursday at the passing-out ceremony of the Batch ‘B’ corps members that the scheme should not be scrapped because of its significance to nation building.

He said that the scheme had in all ramifications achieved the desired objectives since its establishment in 1973, adding that those calling for its scraping should consider its advantages to the nation.

“Despite the calls in certain quarters for the scrapping of the NYSC scheme as a result of the unfortunate incident of the deaths of some youth corps members during the post-election violence in some parts of the country, we believe in FCT administration very strongly that the scheme should not be scrapped because it has remained an important vehicle or tool for national unity and integration and for ways of developing the economy.”
