When the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal and his Deputy,Emeka Ihedioha, paid a surprise visit to the Rivers State Governor and Chairman Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, at Government House,Port Harcourt, their host appealed to the National Assembly to strengthen the 1999 constitution, by effecting an amendment that would make the country a proper federalism.

Governor Amaechi gave the advice on Wednesday night at a dinner hosted in honour of Tambuwal and Ihedioha, at Government House.

Tambuwal had come to represent President Goodluck Jonathan in the flag off of the 17th Sports festival to be hosted in Port Harcourt at the Sharks Stadium, Port Harcourt.

The governor who expressed his belief in the proper amendment of the constitution, equally hinted that the Governors’ Forum wants the constitution amended to properly situate the issues of Revenue Allocation and proper Federalism.

He stressed the need to reduce too many responsibilities that are tied to offices at the national level through the constitutional amendment.

According to him, “I am an apostle of those that want a proper amendment of the constitution. It is the belief of the Governors’ Forum that we need such an amendment, especially to deliver on the issues of Revenue, and a proper federation.”

Governor Amaechi who described the House as the most vibrant arm of government because of the several shades of opinion, interest and background of members, noted that the young men in the house are however patriotic and determined to move the country forward, while urging the leadership to work with the Executive to ensure the development of the country.

The Governor reminded the speaker to be conscious of leaving a legacy that he would be “remembered for” in years to come, emphasizing that the disagreement over his election was an indication that the whole country is watching, and any failure would be a disappointment to the nation.

“I thank you for coming to Port Harcourt. Rivers people are happy with you, I have interacted with you before, I know your nationalistic patriotism. PDP believes in you and when they begin to see you deliver on what will make PDP win election in 2015, you would be well appreciated,” the governor stated.

Governor Amaechi opined that as young men in leadership positions, “It is our last chance to change the country, therefore you must aggregate and protect all interest to ensure a harmonious House” and congratulated him on his election.

Responding, Tambuwal, said the House leadership were in Port Harcourt on a maiden visit to a governor in the country, not because he was a former lawmaker but also as Chairman of Governors Forum.

Hon Tambuwal disclosed that the House is ready to collaborate with all stakeholders in the country to promote peace, harmony and socio-economic development of Nigeria.

He acknowledged that the challenges of leadership are enormous, but with the support and cooperation from colleagues they would be united together to enable them discharge their responsibilities creditably.
