The intervention of Mr. Hafiz Ringim, the Inspector General of Police brought temporary respite for embattled former Speaker of the House of Representatives Dimeji Bankole in the hands of operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, who were determined to arrest him today.

He is wanted for questioning over the N10 billion loan scandal which rocked the House days before they wound down their session.

Bankole had desperately reached out to Ringim to intervene so that he would be allowed to hand over to the next House on monday 6 June when the new legislators will be inaugurated by President Goodluck Jonathan.

He reportedly locked himeself inside his official residence at Apo Legislative Quarters to evade arrest but the detachment of the anti-graft agency’s operatives refused to leave the premises since they were certain that Bankole was hiding within the expansive mansion.

When it became certain to Bankole that there is no escape from the arms of the law, he reportedly reached out to Ringim who had earlier called at the outgoing Speakers’ house in the morning, and Bankole pleaded with him to be allowed to perform his last official function on Monday before keeping his date with the EFCC.

Ringim, according to our source within the Commission pleaded with Mrs. Farida Waziri to grant Bankole’s wish for the last time but with an understanding that he should be under the agency’s surveillance from now till Monday when they can pick him up soon after the handing over session at the National Assembly complex.
