The Lagos State Government, Nigeria, has sacked 26 officers of the Central Business District (CBD) over corruption, extortion and others and suspended 43 others over the same act.

Special Adviser to the Governor on CBD, Hon. Oyinlomo Danmole, who disclosed this yesterday in Lagos, Nigeria, said officers and personnel of the state government were constantly being monitored and punished for any offence they committed.

He said the 26 officers sacked and others were found to have committed various offences such as extortion, absenteeism, discourteous conduct and disobedience when the need arose.

“After thorough investigation of complaints and wrong doings, 43 CBD officers were suspended while 26 were dismissed in the last one year. Our training capacity development has further enhanced discipline and good conduct among the personnel,” he stated.

Danmole said that the Lagos Island Local Government had been complementing government’s effort by taking measures to improve on sanitation and the environment not only in other streets outside the CBD.

He added that disorderliness would not make a return to the Lagos CBD and that the vibrant business environment would retain its sanity with the continued support of all stakeholders.

The special adviser also said that the state government had been able to provide toilet facilities to the people at the CBD in order to stop open defecation in the area, thus constituting an eyesore.

“A noticeable gap which threatened the environment is the unavailability of toilet facilities befitting a CBD as obtainable in developed cities with similar features as Lagos CBD.

“Human wastes are seen every morning in major parts of the CBD. This is because illegal toilets with severe hygienic consequences hitherto used by shoppers and business operators have been taken over by hoodlums and turned to homes.

“In the light of this and in pursuance of one of our ministerial responsibilities of ensuring efficient environmental service and improvement in solid waste management, various location s were identified for the construction of the facility for the use of shoppers and business and to stem the incessant pollution of the environment,” he stated.

He said five toilets had been constructed in areas such as Outer Marina, opposite the Linea Park; CMS Taxi Car Park; Outer Marina, behind Oando filling station; Adeniji Adele Foreshore by Ejalonibu and Leventis, opposite the BRT Bus stop.
